Have you found a stray? Can you no longer care for your own cat? Cat Haven takes friendly, adoptable cats and kittens from the community when space is available.
If you would like to apply to place a cat or kitten in our program, please complete an admission request and allow 5 to 7 business days to receive a response via email. Be sure to check your spam mail for a response.
If you are looking for immediate placement, Companion Animal Alliance is the only open-intake shelter in Baton Rouge.
You just found a group of kittens and their mother is nowhere to be seen.
Before that rescue instinct kicks in and you scoop them up, take a deep breath, step back and evaluate the situation.
In most cases, removing the kittens is not the best response.
Healthy kittens?
Give mom time.
Mother cats may leave their kittens for several hours at a time. If the kittens are warm and don’t appear sick or in distress, their mom is likely nearby, getting food or hiding from you.
The kittens’ best chances for survival are with their mom. Her milk is much better quality than kitten milk replacement. She’s able to keep them warm and stimulate them to pee and poop, as well as help them learn to be cats.
Keep in mind that your presence may keep her away, so monitor the nest from a distance. Or, you may sprinkle a ring of flour around the nest or place some light twigs atop the kittens. If these are disturbed when you return or the kittens have full, rounded bellies, the mother cat is caring for her babies.

If you have monitored the kittens from a distance for several hours and their mother has not returned, the kittens may need assistance.
I have found a cat I cannot keep. Can you take it?
We are not an open-intake shelter, but we may be able to accept kittens and cats as space allows.
To be considered, please complete the rehoming application using the button below. Our team will review your submission and contact you by email within approximately one week. If you need assistance sooner, we recommend contacting the open-intake shelter in your parish or other local animal welfare organizations, as we may not be able to respond immediately.
If space is available, we will arrange an appointment for you to bring the cat or kitten(s) to our facility. If we are unable to accept them at that time, we will provide information about other organizations and resources that may be able to assist you.
We unfortunately do not have the equipment or a veterinarian on staff to manage medical emergencies. If you believe a cat is sick or injured, please take it to your nearest veterinary emergency hospital for immediate care.
For animals within East Baton Rouge Parish, Companion Animal Alliance (the open-intake shelter for Baton Rouge) does have veterinary staff who may be able to provide evaluation and treatment.
If you are unable to reach Companion Animal Alliance or they are closed, LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital may be able to assist injured stray animals, provided the individual bringing the animal in is surrendering it due to inability to afford medical care.
