Cat Haven receives hundreds of calls each month for requests to take cats and kittens into our program. Unfortunately, we are unable to help all of those who call.
Cat Haven depends solely on foster homes to provide shelter for our cats, so we can only take
in cats or kittens when foster space becomes available. When calling or emailing Cat Haven with an intake request, your name is placed on our list and we will call only when space becomes available.
We encourage those who need to place a cat or kitten to explore other avenues in the event that we are unable to give immediate assistance. Below are some suggestions and
resources available.
I found a cat
If you have found a cat in your area, try to locate its owner before attempting to place the cat with a rescue organization. You can place an ad in your local newspaper, post flyers in your neighborhood and ask neighbors if they recognize the cat. You should also contact your area animal control to see if someone has called looking for a cat of a similar description. Veterinarians often have lost & found
boards in their offices, so check vets in your area. If you find a female that appears to be nursing kittens, you should provide food and water for her, but do not remove her from the area as she will need to remain with her kittens to nurse and care for them. If you find an orphaned kitten(s), contact your local
animal hospital to receive instructions on bottle-feeding the kitten as they can only go a short time between feedings. You can also consult our Health & Behavior page to find information
on how to feed and care for small kittens.
I need a home for my cat
If you find yourself in a situation that you must find a home for your cat, there are many options. First, ask friends and relatives if they might be willing to provide a home for your feline.
You can also post flyers at your vet's office, church, workplace, etc. Make sure it's colorful with a great camera shot of your kitty. You can also place an ad in your local newspaper, but we do not
suggest advertising your cat for free. Post the ad with a small fee to eliminate people with ill intentions such as selling cats to research companies, dog baiting, etc. To find other rescue organizations in your area
that may be able to help place your pet, visit www.petfinder.org where you can search by zip code or city. If your situation is short term such as traveling or moving, you might consider
contacting a local pet sitter or your vet for boarding options until you return or get settled into your new home.
If after exhausting these options, you still need help placing a cat or kitten, you can contact Cat Haven by email or by phone at 225-346-4238. Please do not bring your cat to our adoption events for intake as we are unable to
accept them at these locations. Our coordinators will contact you if space is available and set up an appointment time to meet you and your feline friend.
